Window Condensation

Window Condensation

Condensation is common in the winter months, however it can cause: wood rot, mould, plaster damage and odors. There are three types of condensation: exterior condensation, interior condensation, and condensation between window panes.


Interior condensation occurs from excessive moisture in a warm house, when the temperature is cold outside. There are a few solutions to minimize the condensation build up:

  • Use of moisture eliminators. These are absorbent material that can be purchased in bags and placed near windows to remove excess humidity.

  • Turn down any humidifiers

  • Turn on exhaust fans when showering or cooking, then leaving it on for 15 minutes after finishing the shower/cooking.

  • Open the windows to circulate the air and remove excess warmth.

  • Raise the temperature of the window, the use of blinds and curtains can warm the window, preventing moisture from condensing on it.

  • Adding weather stripping to windows

  • Use storm windows

  • Invest in a dehumidifier

  • Install a window insulation kit

  • Buy an air-to-air exchanger to circulate the air


Exterior condensation or dew usually occurs during night/early morning and evaporates when the sun comes out.


Condensation between window panes occurs when the seal between the panes are damaged or the desiccant inside the window is saturated. Here are some tips to clear it:

  • clean the windows, sometime a buildup of grease or cleaning products make a window look hazy, which can be mistaken for condensation.

  • replace the window panes

  • replace the window, newer technology in window manufacturing makes the window more efficient at insulating and preventing condensation.
